BEST OF BRUSHES

I get asked about my brushes EVERY time I post a tutorial on

instagram

! It's a hot topic- so today I bring you;

2018 Best of Brushes:

  • Liquid/Cream Foundation-It Cosmetics Heavenly Skin Smoothing Brush $48 Worth the hefty price tag! It blends and smooths foundation like no other I've ever tried- it also washes nicely and never sheds bristles.

  • Concealer Blender-Pixi Strobe and Sculpt Double Ended Brush $14 The Domed end blends under eye concealer perfectly with its soft touch and perfect shape. I used the other end to set my concealer with loose powder. I great price and a great brush!

  • Blush/Bronzer-Real Techniques Blush Brush $9 I have two- I love them so much and the price cannot be beat! Fluffy and soft to blend blush, bronzer or powder in a snap.

  • Large All Over Shadow-Japonesque All Over Eye Brush $15 Hard to find- but worth the search. I use this brush in every eye look to quickly and efficiently blend my shadows. It's BIG but that's why it works so fast.

  • Eye Shadow Must Haves-Fluffy Blending Brush, Tapered Blending Brush, Domed Pencil Brush $6/ each (Or a set of four for $19) I tried these affordable brushes on a whim and boy am I glad I did! They are soft, cut well, and work like a charm! The fluffy blender is my go-to, but I reccomend you buy the whole set so you'll have everything you need!

BEST OF LIPS

Best of Lips 2018 Winners:

  • Lipstick: Elf Matte Lip Color $3 Although its called 'Matte', it is more like a Satin finish in my book. A very light sheen adds to the comfort of this formula, plus the colors are beautifully opaque. I also love the small size of the bullet making it easy to get a clean application.

  • Lip Gloss:Covergirl Katy Kat Gloss $8 The formula is spot on! Not too sticky- but just sticky enough, comfortable and moisturizing on the lips, and opaque with beautiful colors to choose from. (although there are a couple oddball shades like blue that just need to be ignored)

  • Lip Liner:Wet n Wild Gel Liner $3 I don't have time or the desire to have to sharpen anything. So retractable options are the only ones for me! This formula glides on nicely because of the gel, but also stays smudge proof all day once it dries down.

Which lippie was your top contender this year? xo

BEST OF FACE

2018 Winners for FACE makeup include:

  • Foundation:LA Girl Pro Coverage Foundation $9 The foundation I wore far more than any other in 2018! It's got a beautiful finish that is glowy, but nicely covers redness and spots. Plus the price is just right!

  • Concealer:First Aid Beauty Bendy Avocado Concealer $22 Worth the hype and worth the cost! Not only blends like a dream, but covers under eyes and spots with great staying power. I have not ventured to another concealer after trying this one for the last 6 months!

  • Powder:Maybelline Fit Me Loose Finishing Powder $8 Comparable to the high-end favorites out there that are three times the price- this powder is so finely milled it blends without looking cakey or chalky. I wear the transparent shade to set my concealer, but there are also more tones to choose for that will offer additional coverage if you're looking for more.

What were your favs in the face category this year?

MAKEUP TIPS FOR MATURE SKIN

Mature skin, Makeup for mature skin, women over 50 makeup

You asked for it- and it's here! My top

tips for applying makeup once your skin has hit that 'mature' mark

. I know I am not there yet, so you may be thinking, 'Megan, what do you know!?' and I can see your point. But as a working makeup artist for over 15 years, and as someone who STUDIES the industry like a crazy person, I do think I know a few things that could be really helpful to you!

So here are a few of my recommended tips and products that will leave you feeling more confident and beautiful no matter your age. [

video here

]

Over 50? Do This...  Not That

  • Do Lift Brows with Highlight and Natural Brow Strokes... Don't overly pencil in harsh brows when your hairs are scarce, you'll draw more attention to the scarcity and visually weigh the eye down. Chella Highlight Stick // NYX Micro Brow Pencil

  • Do use blush on the higher points of the cheeks to accentuate and lift cheekbones... Don't streak blush across the length of the cheekbone, or focus on the front apple of the cheek. This will bring the look of the cheek down lower on the face and accentuate loss of volume on the cheeks. Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush

  • Do conceal the undereye all the way across the cheekbone to the temple using a color that is close to your skin tone... Don't conceal only the moon shape under eyes in the socket or use overly bright/light tones. This will only cause more contrast next to the shadows of your fine lines and make them appear darker and deeper. La Girl Peach Corrector and Concealer

  • Do define lashes with a soft line of shadow... Don't use harsh/black eyeliner around the eye it will close down the eye, accentuate loose skin and age you up. Makeup Revolution Rose Gold Chocolate Bar Palette

  • Do use a clear lip liner and powdered lipstick to keep lip color from feathering into fine lines... don't use a waxy/ glossy or wet lipstick that will travel and accentuate lines around the lips. Pixi Clear Lip Liner // Karity Lip Lock

4 EASY RULES FOR WEARING NUDE MAKEUP

rules for wearing the nude makeup trend

Wearing Nude toned makeup is a beautiful way to look pulled together without looking over done. However it can quickly go into 'blah' territory and wash you out if you are not careful. Here are four tips to keep you looking polished while wearing the look. [

Video Here

]

Rules for wearing Nude Makeup:

Keep your Lipstick shade1-2 levels darker than your skin tone (not lip tone) and opt for a pink or peach hint. Avoid Beige or Grey toned nudes- those will make you look dead.

Don't forget the lashes! When wearing nude toned eyeshadow, do not skimp on the mascara. Other wise your eyes will disappear and look washed out.

BROWS, BROWS, BROWS-  groomed and filled brows will frame the eyes and elevate the look, to keep you looking fresh. Otherwise it can quickly go into the 'no makeup' look, which is not the same is wearing Nude makeup.

Color on the cheeks keeps you looking ALIVE! When the tone on eyes and lips is subdued, don't forget to add some color and glow to the cheeks, so the face still has dimension and doesn't look flat.

AQUARIUS INSPIRED // FRESH & BEACHY

Aquarius Makeup, Fresh & Beachy Beauty, Beach Waves, Pink Eyeshadow, Star Sign Beauty

February marks the month of the

Aquarius,

so this beauty look is inspired by her: She's adventurous and light hearted, is known to be an inventor and a visionary, and she has a lot of flirty charm.

The Aquarius gal loves the water, sand and sea and embraces easy beauty. Her birthstone is Amythist so I've included a little pop of purple in this Fresh & Beachy look. Here's how I accomplished her style. [

NEXT GENERATION OF MAKEUP APPLICATORS

Beauty Blender, Artis Brush Dupe, Silicone Sponge, Silisponge, Ulta Super Blender

Move over makeup brushes, it's time for a new generation of makeup applicators to find their way into your hearts! Today I am sharing 3 new categories of makeup applicators that you may have not heard of just yet. They are designed to make your routine more seamless, and use technological advances to up your makeup game! [

Video Here

]

Silicone Blenders

Silicone Sponges made it BIG in 2017 and have changed the way we apply liquid foundation to the face. They absorb ZERO amount of your product and are very easy to clean and keep sanitary. Best for those who use liquid foundation and want full coverage.

Paddle Brushes

The unique shape and handle (similar look to a large toothbrush) gives these brushes a leg up on blending and blurring your products. They contain a much larger number of bristles in each brush, meaning you can distribute your products more quickly. They work with liquids, cream, and powders for a seamless blend.

Bouncy Sponges

The shapes and sizes are ever changing with these sponges, that have a bouncy suede like texture designed to bounce across the face to press products into the skin for a flawless finish. The sponges are used damp which will slightly thin out the product you're applying giving a more natural medium coverage. The unique shapes are designed to fit the contours of your face, and can be used with liquids, creams and powders.

Have you tried any of these fun tools? xo

BRANDS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT... BUT SHOULD!

We all know the BIG names in makeup- brands like Loreal, Clinique, and Bobbi Brown. But there is SO MUCH MORE out there, in terms of small independent brands that aren't as well known- but are simply amazing and I want you to hear about them.

Today, I am rounding up 5 of my top hidden gems- and sharing one product that I think you should try from each line. Ready? Let's go! [video

here

]

Colour Pop

 To be fair I have mentioned Colour Pop many times on the blog in years past, so you may already know about it. But the brand has recently launched at Sephora, which means it's now going to be a household name for anybody who shops for makeup.

  • Ultra Blotted Lip, is my favorite formula in the line. It is the perfect lipstick for the woman who doesn't wear lipstick, but wants to. Confused? Well, here's the deal: It's sheer but matte, two things that don't usually go together. You can get a great pop of color that lasts longer than a gloss, but it still shows the texture of your lips through the color. Amazing for a more subtle look than your typical Liquid Lipstick. Which Colour Pop also makes, and those are great too!

Karity

 This indie line is more compact and produces in smaller batches, so the quality always remains

consistently

 high. There's no middle man here either, they only sell direct from their own site- meaning the prices are low. Can I get an 'Amen'!?

  • The Shadow Palettes are stunning, with blendable pigments that POP off the eye. The Peach Palette is a dream, but the Nudes & Rudes palette cannot lead you astray.

Huda Beauty

 Huda is no stranger to the beauty world- her Youtube channel has over 2 million subscribers! But the average consumer may have never heard of her and her cosmetics line, that is now available at Sephora. Her shadows are stunning, and her Lip Strobes make any pout just a touch more

glamorous

, but my favorite are her Holographic Lip Toppers.

  • The Mini Lip Strobe Collection is a great way to jump into the holographic makeup trend. You get 4 minis that can be worn alone or over the top of a lipstick. The light reflection is like 'BAM'! and I even love using them right in the center of my lips for a little extra plump.

Models Own

 is a UK drugstore staple, but the US is finally getting in on the action. It's a HUGE line with over 600 products (we don't have them all here- bummer) and they are a great budget option for makeup lovers.

  • Sculpt & Glow Highlight Palette gives you three BIG pans of color in each compact. The pink version is my favorite and gives you a blush and highlighter in a single step. I love that there are powder and cream formulas in the same compact too, so you can adjust depending on the look you want.

Soap & Glory

 is another UK transplant, and is mostly well known for their lotions and body scrubs. But their makeup line is fantastic as well, and the collection comes complete with super catchy packaging and names. Don't be offended... it's funny people!

  • One Heck of a Blot Foundation is a super unique formula, that starts off as a liquid and dries down to a velvet powder finish. That powder goes to work absorbing excess oil throughout the day, helping to combat the shine and need for blotting. Love this stuff- only downside is the lack of shade variety.

Happy Shopping! xo

PUMPKIN SPICE MAKEUP LOOKS FOR FALL

Pumpkin Spice

is the buzz word of the season, but don't limit it to just your favorite foods- try using this warm Fall tone

in your makeup routine

as well!

Look for colors that are a warm orangey-brown hue, and use them on your eyes, cheeks and lips for an all over monochrome Pumpkin Spice look. Here's a few of my budget friendly favorites: [

Here are a few more inspirations for the look- aren't these ladies all stunning!?

GET AN OOPS-PROOF CAT EYE

Maybelline Curvitude Liner Review, Hard Candy Oopsy Proof Liner Remover review

If you are like me, you struggle to use liquid liner and get an even cat-eye. It's so freaking hard! Even after so many years applying makeup to myself and others, it still causes me to sweat when it comes time to

apply a sharp liquid liner

.

I am always on the lookout for tools that will make the task easier, and finally I have found the perfect combo of liners that are making my life so much easier. So, if you hate that darned cat-eye too, check out these bad boys!

  • Maybelline Curvitude Liner This guy is my new best friend! That bent neck makes all the difference in the world when it comes to using a liquid liner. The angled tip allows you to more easily work around your lashes and to SEE what your doing as you do it. The tip is also super fluid and leaves a tug-free black line that can be super fine or thick depending on your pressure. It stays put all day as well, and dries down *almost* completely matte.

  • Hard Candy Oopsy-Proof Liner Eraser Now for those of us who need a little extra help, reach for this miracle worker to correct any mistakes after you've applied the liner. It goes on clear and wipes away the liner quickly and easily. It's great to even out the two sides, change the angle of your flick, or sharpen up any blurry edges. Life changing!

I hope you'll pick them up and give them a try, let me know how it goes in the comments below!

!function(d,s,id){var e, p = /^http:/.test(d.location) ? 'http' : 'https';if(!d.getElementById(id)) {e = d.createElement(s);e.id = id;e.src = p + '://' + 'widgets.rewardstyle.com' + '/js/shopthepost.js';d.body.appendChild(e);}if(typeof window.__stp === 'object') if(d.readyState === 'complete') {window.__stp.init();}}(document, 'script', 'shopthepost-script');

JUST A HINT OF TINT // BEST SHEER MAKEUP

For those ladies out there looking for a more natural and softer makeup finish- products that offer just a

'hint of tint'

are just what you need.

They are designed to offer a more

sheer coverage, that will enhance your look

, without covering up your features. Here are a few of my recommended products that give just enough color but still have major payoff. [

video

]

Face:

  • Maybelline Dream Cushion- My go to foundation all Summer long. It gives beautiful pigment to even out redness and cover blemishes, but has a super thin consistency so the texture of my skin still shows through. It's perfect for the gal who 'hates foundation'.

Brows

  • Billion Dollar Brows Hint of Tint Brow Gel- This is a great brow gel that gives more color then a clear formula, but is still more subtle than a powder or a pencil. The universal taupe color is great for everyone.

Cheeks

  • Pixi Sheer Cheek Gel- Although the colors look bold, this formula is so sheer it only leaves a kiss of pigment on your cheeks. Just a few dabs on the cheekbones will give you a glow and flush of color that is so natural, you might just be blushing!

Highlight

Lips

  • Colour Pop Ultra Blotted Lip- Hands down my favorite formula ever. It is a Matte-Sheer finish which means you can still see your lips ever so slightly under the pigment, but no glossy finish. It's just like the name says, a 'blotted' lipstick look. ***Giveaway*** Head over to my instagram for a chance to win the ENTIRE COLLECTION. Ends 7/23

Eyes

  • NYX Lid Lingerie- I love these for a quick was of color all over the lid. They dry down and become budge proof, but still have a beautiful metallic finish.

What other subtle makeup products do you love? Let me know in the comments below! xo

THE BIGGEST TREND IN LIPS RIGHT NOW // PETAL LIPS

MAC Makeup recently called

'Petal Lips' the trend of the season

, and I couldn't agree more! These colors are bold playful and so fun to wear in warm weather.

Reach for colors found in a Summer bouquet- Reds, Magentas, Corals, Oranges and Pinks.

That means it's time to retire (for now) nudes, browns and purples.

Here are

MACs Petal Lips

, and some other drugstore options: [

video

]

Petal Lips Shown:

If these bold colors are overwhelming to you, then try 'borrowing their pigment' and just using the color as a stain instead of a full blown lipstick. To do this, dab on a few spots of color along the lower lip, then while it's still moveable, use your finger to smudge the color across the lip. Once evenly blended, lick your lips and press them together to transfer some pigment to the upper lip as well. This will give a wash of the color- but your lip texture will stay natural. It's my favorite way to wear a bold color!

YOU'RE TOO OLD FOR THAT MAKEUP

There comes a time in everyone's life when we realize that we are not as young as we once were. It can happen when we least expect it too- like when you suddenly throw out your back while doing an activity you've done a thousand times before!?! Ugh, the worst.

Well today's post is all about getting older in regards to your makeup. It's a question I get asked a lot;

'Am I too old for that?'

Here's the thing,

getting stuck in a makeup rut can date us in unexpected ways

. Trends change and so does our skin with age, so

both

updating and evolving are crucial.

I'm breaking down a few suggestions for you when it comes time to re evaluate your makeup routine at every age. So grab your trash can and let's get started. [

Video Here

]

And if you are still wearing the same makeup you wore in High School, then YES- you are to

o old for that!

In your 30's:

Time to ditch the frosted cool tones, SILVERY or white eye shadows, and instead opt for colors found in nature. Stick with warmer tones that accentuate your eye color and pair nicely with your blush and lip makeup. Silvery or Icy shadows were all the rage in the 90's but that was almost 20 years ago!... Time to move on and move up to a more sophisticated palette.

In your 40's:

Move on from all things GLITTER, and instead opt for matte shadows, lip glosses, blushes, bronzers... everything really! As our skin begins to form fine lines and wrinkles, formulation matters most. Glitter is often very drying and can cause irritation plus it can collect in creases in the skin and accentuate wrinkles. So opt for a subtle shimmer at the

most

around the eyes, cheeks and lips.

In you 50's and 60's +:

Opt for BROWN eyeliner and say goodbye to black liner all together. [Or opt to ditch liner completely for a brighter option even still!] Black liner 'ages up' every women, and at this point in our lives we are wanting to look and feel younger. Keep the eyes bright and open with a softer rim of color. Remember

dark colors close off

or make smaller, so black around sagging eyes is not flattering. Focus on mascara and a soft shadow to open up the eye and look more youthful.

LUSH LASHES WITHOUT THE GLUE: LASH LIFT 101

lash lift salons in Utah, What is a lash lift, Lash Lift Utah

It's no secret that lush lashes can make you look and feel so much better. They frame the face and bring attention to the eyes, and give you a boost of beauty and confidence. But if you are like me, you may not be able to commit to lash extensions and the maintenance that they require.

Enter, the Lash Lift!

The Lash Lift is essentially a lash perm and tint together

in a two part service at a salon. The lashes are permed in a lifted and curled position, and then tinted with a rich dark color from root to tip.

The results last upto 6 weeks and women everywhere are jumping on this band wagon. Just search the term

#lashlift on instagram

and you'll see some amazing results. The price typically ranges from $60-100 depending on the salon.

Moore Hair Design, Lash Lift Service, Salt Lake City Lashes

Take a look at the process in the

video

below for more info.

Just keep in mind that this process should be done in a salon by a trained professional, you don't want to be messing around when it comes to your eyes. I had my lashes done by

@BeautyBy_Bree

at

Moore Hair Design

in Cottonwood Heights.

The process takes about 1hr. from start to finish, and isn't painful in any way. Your lashes are carefully glued back to a silicone pad (there are different sizes for different lash lengths and the amount of curl desired) Next a lash-safe perming solution is applied to the lashes and processed for about 15 minutes. Next, the neutralizing solution is added and another 15 minutes of wait time.

Next, the tinting dye is applied to darken the lashes all the way to the root. This step alone makes a big difference in the final look of your lashes (unless you are blessed with super dark lashes to begin with, lucky you!)

After the tint is processed a conditioning oil is applied to loosen the lashes from the silicone pad. Just like a perm for your hair, you'll want to avoid wetting the lashes for 24-48 hours to ensure the curl is set. And that's it! Beautiful lift lashes without an ounce of glue.

Have a question, just ask! xo

STAY PUT SHADOWS

Cream pigment shadows

are some of my favorites to reccomend to makeup newbies because they are really forgiving and easy to use. I find that they blend easier and offer amazing staying power even on oily lids. Or if you are an advanced makeup guru, these types of shadows can help to create graphic looks and detailed designs.

These new

Eye Pigments

from Milk Makeup are some of the most pigmented I have tried. a TINY pinpoint of product covers the entire lid and gives such a gorgeous metallic finish to the eye. They can be used as a base for powder shadows or worn all on their own. Use your ring finger to blend up to the crease line for a softer look, or use a

small shadow brush

to pack on the color to get an opaque finish.

My fav colors include

After Party

(Rose Gold),

Hotel Lobby

(Champagne),

Gig

(Bronze), and

Peep Show
