PERFUME FOR YOUR HAIR? // HAIR MIST 101

Best Hair Perfume Mists

I take scents very seriously.

Just watch one of my

youtube

videos, and it's pretty much guaranteed that I smell something in the video! The scent of a beauty product is a huge factor when it comes to purchasing a product or not, I've definitely learned that first hand over my 15+ years selling shampoo!

But did you know, that

the scents in shampoo are not designed to linger in the hair

?

That's right, the vast majority of shampoo formulations these days are made with 'flash fragrances' that give a burst of scent upon first use- but then dissipate quickly. They do this because most people use multiple products and layering them would cause too many scents to be in play- it wouldn't be good.

Enter: The Hair Mist

What is a hair mist?

It's a perfume spray designed specifically for use in the hair.

The mist is finer, uses less alcohol (so it isn't drying) and they usually contain some shine ingredients to make the hair look nicer as well as smell better.

Another factor to consider is that most women aren't washing their hair daily, so a hair perfume is nice to freshen up the hair on days 2 and 3. [

PERFUME OILS 101

What are Perfume Oils?

Simply put they are the Creme de la Creme of perfume, with the most concentrated amount of fragrance suspended in an oil base. The formulas don't contain any alcohol so they don't evaporate quickly like traditional perfumes do.

Instead

the oil is warmed by your skin

and releases fragrance throughout the day. The formula is rich and luxurious and makes me feel as though I am a delicate lady of a previous decade. (Sidenote: Have you seen the BBC Series, 'The Paradise'? I just binged watched the whole series, and these perfume oils are exactly what the ladies wore back then!) The

fragrance oils are intended to be placed on your pulse points

, and to be massaged into the skin- becoming part of the wearers essence.

This means that every scent will smell

slightly different on each wearer,

and the result is truly unique.

Here are my favorite perfume oils, that are highly recommended (

):

  • The Blend by Fred Segal Custom Oils Buy one or more of your favorite individual notes, than layer them together for a completely custom fragrance. My top picks are 03 Vanilla, 07 White Tea, and 10 Citrus Zest. Check out these recipe ideas too!

  • Kai Perfume Oil The perfect 'Beach Vacay' scent filled with Gardenia and White Exotic flowers. Reminds me of Hawaii every time I put it on.

  • Inkling Scents This company makes small batch oil perfumes and has some amazing scents and packaging! I love the ink pot and feather quill display for a very lady-like experience. Favs scents include Unify and Sultry.

  • Diptyque Do Son If you've ever smelled a Diptyque candle, you know just how heavenly their scents are. But the perfumes steal the show- and the Do Son scent has beautiful rose and floral notes. The lasting power is great on this one, and the packaging is perf.

  • Nirvana White& Black Black is rich, warm and quite musky with notes of Vanilla and Candlewood. White is a lighter more feminine scent with notes of peony. Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen know a thing or two about mystery, and these scents are a perfect reflection of their styles.

YOUR SUMMER SCENT GUIDE // FLORALS

Daisy Dream Marc Jacobs Review, Flora by Gucci Glorious Mandarin Review

I LOVE to explore new perfumes seasonally because our sense of smell is so strongly connected to memory. Every time I get a whiff of gardenia, it's like I am instantly transported back to Hawaii and the first trip I took there with my late grandparents. Such happy memories!

Try wearing a new scent on your next Summer vacation

, so you can revisit those memories too every time you spray that perfume. It really works! And it's not too late to scoop up one of these for an amazing

Mother's Day gift

as well.

Summer Florals are all the rage right now

, and I've narrowed it down to two fragrances that I think you'll love too. One for day and one for night time wear:

  • Daisy Dream by Marc Jacobs- Marc Jacobs is known for his floral range of perfumes- and I have loved almost all of them, but Daisy Dream has become my favorite by far! It is light and bright, and truly a 'happy' scent. It has notes or fruit like blackberry and pear and my favorite addition is the coconut water.

Although it is sweet smelling, it is still very fresh and airy which is perfect for day time wear or for anyone who prefers a soft feminine scent during the evening too. Also, this one is perfect for teens and 20-somethings!

  • Flora by Gucci // Glorious Mandarin- This perfume is perfect for night time wear in the Summer months because it is still a bright floral but it has a depth to it with a light musk note. The mandarin orange tone pairs really nicely with a pina colada note, making it sweet and fruity too. It's perfect for a more 'mature' women and someone that likes a sophisticated scent.

Have you tried a new scent lately that I should check out? Let me know in the comments below, xo

THE FRENCH-GIRL SCENTS YOU'LL LOVE FOR FALL

french parfume favorites, Dior Dune, Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Lys Soleia

Melissa Bailey

My fascination with France started young. My favorite book of all time was Madeline, and a read it religiously as a child. I can still quote many of the brilliantly worded rhymes from the stories. And those illustrations! Don't get me started on the beautiful images found in those books, I still treasure them to this day.

When junior high came around, I chose to take French as my foreign language- much to my parents' dismay. (They thought Spanish would be much more useful in life... and they were right- I don't get much practice speaking french, but who cares!?!) I took six years of French class to be exact, but I only remember the basics, sadly. But that six years of hard work, was enough to warrant a trip to France when I was 17, and I'll never forget it! The magic of France is still with me, and I can't wait to go back.

That long tangent there, was really just to tell you about two of my newest perfume collection additions. I feel like Fall is the perfect season to change your scent, and nothing changes a mood more than fragrance. I know it's still warm outside and you are hanging on to Summer just as much as I am, but cooler weather will be here soon, plus I had to speed up my process when my 2-year-old kindly shattered my Summer perfume bottle on my bathroom floor recently. I went searching for a new fragrance and wound up with two- both French. No complaints here.

The first, Dune by Dior

is full of warm citrus and vanilla notes and just a hint of the ocean mist. I have been wearing this in the day time, and the staying power is legendary. It's perfect for early fall when you are just starting to add layers and the nights are cooling down.

The second scent I'll be wearing this season is Lys Soleia by Guerlain. Guerlain is the ultimate beauty label in my mind, and I love everything I have ever tried from the French design house. If you haven't shopped their makeup counter before, put that on your list of must-dos. This scent from their Aqua Allegoria collection is very robust and sensual, with a spicy musk note, and a Lilly kicker. This scent lends itself beautifully to night time wear, and is quite strong so stick with only 1-2 sprays.

If you are looking for a new parfume in your life- I hope you'll check out these two! We can be smell-twins... yes, that's a real thing. I just made it up. xo
