SNOOP DUPE: THE LIPSENSE ALTERNATIVE

LipSense Dupe, Maybelline 24 hour Super Stay Lip Color Review

If you are like me, you might cringe when you hear the word 'Lipsense'.

Why, you ask? Well I am not a fan of or advocate of Multi-Level Marketing companies no matter how you spin it. Even if the product has its benefits, I just refuse to participate in direct sales on my blog or in my real life.

It's just not for me.

But, I am not living under a rock and I of course have heard, seen, and been

invited to

added against my will to about 50 different facebook groups that are all centered around selling Lipsense. I've seen the claims of 18 hour wear lipstick that literally won't come off, even when you want it to come off. And I have seen the claims of women around the country who are now suddenly rich and driving blue cars all the way to the bank. Again, non of that is for me.

For those of you who like the idea of a longwear lipstick however, I have a great alternative for you to consider... and at $10 instead of $25 for each color, I think this one is a winner!

LipSense Dupe

The

Maybelline SuperStay 24 Hour Color

line is pretty much a dead ringer for Lipsense. It comes in 30 shades, and is applied in the same way. In fact I like the topcoat much better! You apply a couple layers of the liquid lipstick and let it dry fully, then follow up with a hydrating clear balm (which is more like a chapstick and less like a gloss.) The formula is also nice because it is a happy medium between gloss and matte- meaning you don't have to buy two different sealers, at $20 each.

I don't claim that it is as smudge proof as Lipsense or that it lasts quite as long- but I do claim it lasts at least 8 hours and is much less sticky, doesn't sting sensitive lips, and is less splotchy as it starts to wear off.

And with any longwear lipstick, you'll want to make sure your lips a prepped and smooth for best application, I swear by the

ELF Lip Exfoliator

to exfoliate and hydrate prior to application.

It is eat and drink resistant and removes without a special (additional $10) product, like the 'Oops Remover' from Lipsense. If you need to get it off use a makeup remover wipe and a little coconut oil- quick and easy!

I hope you'll give it a try as an alternative- and let me know what you think in the comments below! xo

PS- If you LOVE Lipsense, then good for you- please keep loving it... to each their own!

STROBING MADE EASY FOR A WINTER GLOW

strobing for beginners, highlighters, best highlighters for fair skin, Maybelline Strobing Liquid, The Balm Mary Lou Manizer, Colour Pop Cheek Shock Highlighter

If you haven't heard the word 'strobing' yet... you might be living under a rock! Just teasing...

But seriously 2016 was the year of strobing, or extreme highlighting- and it turns out that trend isn't going anywhere for the New Year.

Today I decided to finally post about strobing because I think winter is the perfect time to try it out. Why? Well to me, summer time is all about bronzy warm looks, and winter just lends itself to shimmery makeup better. So let's jump in and learn how to fake that glow, yo! [

video

]

What is strobing?

  • Strobing is the opposite of contouring, where instead of creating shadows on the recesses of the face to create dimension, we use highlights on the high points of the face to create dimension. Check out the different placement in the photo above.

Do we still contour when using this technique?

  • No, traditionally this technique replaces contouring, otherwise the two together can look too extreme for most women.

Benefits of Strobing?

  • Quicker to apply and blend than contouring

  • Brightens the face and eyes to give a youthful dewey finish

Where to we apply our strobe?

On the round/ high points of the face where natural light reflection would occur

  • Tops of cheekbones- here you can be most liberal and apply a decent amount

  • Down bridge of nose- avoid the nose if you have a wider bridge because this can make the nose look larger and wider, less is more on the nose

  • Cupids bow above the lip- gives a pouty and full look to the lip

  • Above and below brow bones- gives an instant lift to the eye brow

DIY WINTER BATH BOMBS, HAND SCRUB, & SALT SOAK

If you're a long time reader you've probably heard me talk about my obsession with the perfect bath. I take bath time very seriously! And like any bath connoisseur knows- it's the 'add-ins' that make all the difference.

I love a good

LUSH bath bomb

, just like the rest of them- but let's be honest... those suckers are expensive. So I save them for special occasions, and often ask for them for gifts (ahem, honey).

Today however I am sharing a few of my tried and true bath add-in recipes. And when I say tried, I mean it! It took me a long time to figure out the right ratios to get the perfect bath bomb at home. That's a lot of wasted epsom salt people, good thing it isn't too costly.

Holiday Bath Trio Recipe: [

video

]

Honey Bath Bomb

(yields 6, 2inch bombs)

  • 1 Cup Dr. Teals Milk & Honey Epsom Salt

  • 1/2 Cup Baking Soda

  • 1/2 Cup Citric Acid (sometimes hard to find in stores, but will be located in the 'canning section')

  • 1tsp. Water

  • 1-2 tsp. Almond Oil

  • Food Coloring to Preferred Color

  • Liquid Dropper

  • Spray Bottle with Water

  • Molds (also use ornaments or plastic Easter eggs)

In a large bowl mix all of your dry ingredients together with a whisk, set aside. Next, in a small bowl mix together Water, Almond Oil, and Food Coloring. Use your dropper or very carefully use a spoon to add a few drops of your liquid to the dry ingredients. (Adding to quickly will cause the bubbles to activate and then you won't have any fizz in the tub) Whisk the drops in, and a few more and continue till the mixture is fully combined. It should be crumbly but also compact-able, like fresh brown sugar.

Next scoop your mixture into your molds and compress them very tightly so that no air pockets or cracks form. Use your spray bottle to lightly spray the two sides of the mold so that when you press them together you get a nice seal. You can also use the spray to keep the mixture in the bowl at the right moistness while you're working.

Let the molds set for about one hour to harden, then gently remove the bombs and place them on a towel to harden and dry out over night. Enjoy your bath!

Peppermint Salt Soak

(yields 8oz of soak)

  • 1 Cup Epsom Salt

  • 1 Tbsp. Baking Soda

  • 4+ Drops of Peppermint Essential Oil to Preferred Strength (I like it strong!)

  • Red Food Coloring to Preferred Color

  • Jar or Air Tight Container

Easy as pie! Mix dry ingredients together in a large bowl, and then add your preferred amount of Peppermint essential oil to scent. Next, divide into two bowls, and add red food to one of the bowls to desired 'pinkness'. Finally, scoop alternating layers of white and pink salts into your favorite jar for a festive presentation.

Gingerbread Sugar Scrub

(yields 8oz of scrub)

  • 1/2 Cup Raw Washed Sugar

  • 1/2 Cup Granulated White Sugar

  • 1/2 Coconut Oil

  • 1 tsp. Vanilla Extract

  • 1/2 tsp. Gingerbread Spice

  • 1/2 tsp. All Spice

  • 1/2 tsp. Cinnamon

  • 1/2 tsp. Nutmeg

  • Jar or Air Tight Container

In your mixer combine all ingredients and mix on medium until the coconut oil is softened and whipped into the sugars. Take a deep breath and smell that yumminess before scooping it into a small mason jar with an airtight lid. (shelf life is 2-3 months)

EYELINER TRENDS WORTH TRYING THIS WINTER

Eyeliner is definitely having a big moment in the spotlight, and I for one am loving trying new things. The basic idea is to keep your makeup quite neutral and then add the WOW factor with your liner. It's being done all over the catwalks and red carpets, and now it's time for you to try the trend as well.

As with any trend, I always advise you buy affordable products- after all it's a trend and won't last long. So all of these products are under $10!

Here are the three eyeliner trends to try for Winter 2016

Glitter:

Perfect for a Holiday party or just to add some WOW factor to a basic outfit- glitter is the BIGGEST trend in makeup for Winter 2016.

Keep the glitter 'mature' by using it sparingly and keeping the rest of the face more simple and neutral.

Brights:

Add a POP of color next to your traditional black liner for added interest and fun. Blues, Purples and Greens are easiest to wear- but if you're feeling really bold go for yellow or red!

Outer Third Smudge:

Enhance the shape of your eye and add drama with a smudged cat eye on the out third of the eye only, top, bottom or both!

By keeping the inner corner free from liner the look is less harsh than a fully rimmed eye. Stick with a gel formula for easy blending!

THE ART OF THE PART

The

ART OF THE PART

is one of my favorite topics! I love to see the change when a simple shift happens, especially for women who have been parting their hair in the same place for years!

You might not think that it could make a huge difference, but you'd be surprised with the amount of change it can have. Just look at my three pics above- same makeup, same clothing... but different partings make a HUGE difference in the appearance in my face and the area in which your eye is drawn to.

Here is a quick guide [

video

] that gives you some inspiration and a starting point to finding the most flattering part line.

Off-Center Part:

Off center partings are great for most face shapes and hairlines- especially oval, square, or triangle

. It will drape a small bit over the forehead, hiding some of it, and directly focus to the eye that is more revealed.

Place the parting over the center of one eye, and angle back towards the center of the crown. If you already wear this parting, a simple flip to the opposite side is a great way to add variety

Deep Side Parting:

Deep side partings are best for Round, Long and Oval faces- as well as more angular faces like Heart Shaped and Diamond.

This parting will cover a majority of the forehead, and direct the eye to the cheekbone. It will soften harsh bone structures and give a more 'formal' feeling to the hairstyle.

Part the hair over the tail of one eyebrow, and slide straight back for a more aggressive parting, or angled towards the center of the crown for a less formal style.

Center Parting

:

Center parts are great for Oval, Heart Shaped, and Round face shapes

- this parting draws attention to the forehead and eyes, and is slightly more 'edgy' than the rest. A nod to the hippie/boho vibe, this parting works best with longer hair lengths, and those that don't have cowlicks near the hairline.

Avoid center parts if you have a large forehead (more than 4 finger widths, generally) or a larger nose- as this parting will draw attention to the center of your face and cheekbones. I always wear this parting with slightly more makeup, because it is going to really show off the face (no hiding behind your hair with this one!)

Part right down the middle directly above your nose, but only go back 2-3 inches to avoid looking 'flat-headed', and tease the crown slightly for added volume.

Hope this helps inspire you to try a new parting! You never know till you try! xo

REAL WOMEN MINI MAKEOVERS

The best part of my job is helping women to look and feel their best. I get to see transformations happen every day at the salon- and I often feel so blessed to be a part of changing the confidence of women for the better. We all deserve to feel great!

This week on my Studio5 TV segment I had the opportunity to pick 4 real life viewers of the show, to come in studio and get a mini-makeover with yours truly. We had hundreds of entrants, and narrowing it down was no easy task. The four women I chose all had different needs and starting points with their makeup routines, it was so much fun to give them all a few new tools and tips to try at home.

GLOWTION = MAGIC POTION FOR YOUR FACE

Skincare secrets, glowtion reviews, glowing lotion, dewey moisturizer

Every now and then there is a new breed of skincare that gets me really excited. Theses products must fall into the category of 'WOW' and offer results never seen before. Today I am sharing one such new breed of product that has me giddy [and glowing]... GLOWTION!

What is glowtion?

Simply put, it is a 'glowing-lotion'

. Essentially it's a moisturizer for the face that has been laced with a luminizing ingredient such as mica to give the skin a lit-from-within appearance. The effect is a youthful glow that brightens up the face and adds a dewey finish to your makeup look.

You can wear a glowtion on its own for a dewey finish to the skin without any coverage. Or wear the glowtion just as you would a moisturizer, under your foundation to boost hydration and bump up the glow factor on lackluster days. I love to apply the product all over the skin before my moisturizer, then add a little extra to my undereye concealer before applying for a major glow under my eyes and on top of my cheekbones.

DIY EYEBROW TINTING // IT'S EASIER THAN YOU THINK!

Eyebrows have really taken center stage in the beauty world over the last few years. And I for one have LOVED seeing them become such a huge piece of the puzzle... after all they are literally the 'frame' around the 'window to your soul'! That's a bold statement- but hey, it's true!

I first began tinting my eyebrows during my time in beauty school, and I realized what a life changing experience it can be, especially for fellow blondies like myself. And while a professional tint and wax is always a great way to liven up your features- it's not always in the cards to pay to have that service done at the salon.

Dying your eyebrows at home is easier than you might think, and this post will teach you exactly what to do to get a professional look in under 10 minutes. [Video]

DIY Brow Tinting

  • Use a store bought Root Touch Up Kit by Clairol, and opt for an Ash tone which will appear more natural. 6A is ideal for blonde brows, 5A is great for medium brown, and 4A is best for very dark brown or black. Typically I recommend a 5 minute process time for the Clairol, but start with 3 minutes to determine how dark you want your final results.

  • If you've got very corse brow hairs, or grey in your brows try Just for Men Mustache and Beard Tint and process for about 3 minutes. The Light-Medium, Medium Brown, and Medium-Dark Brown will be the best colors to use on brows.

  • Opt for a color that is AT MOST 2 shades darker than your natural brows

  • Mix the color following the ratio described in the directions which is 1:1 parts color to developer, but remember you'll only need a small amount, about the size of a pea for each part.

  • Apply a layer of Vaseline around the brows first to protect the skin from the dye using a Q-tip.

  • Use a cheap makeup brush to apply the color to the hairs in light upward strokes. Avoid pressing firmly onto the skin... we are tinting the HAIRS, not the skin.

  • Remove any stray dye from the skin with a clean Q-tip.

  • Time for 3-5 minutes, and wipe off using a warm washcloth and shampoo, or a makeup remover wipe. If you applied the right brow first, remove the right brow first as well.

  • Assess the color and repeat to darken the color if necessary.

Typically I recommend tinting every 4 weeks to maintain your color, and one box of dye should last you 8-10 applications. I hope you'll give it a try, let me know if you have any questions below! xo

EASY MOM-HAIR STYLES FOR SUMMER

You've all heard the phrase... 'mom-hair', and it's usually accompanied with a negative connotation. And while I love to rock a 4-day-old messy top knot, just like the best of em, I also appreciate a style that's put together and chic.

Here are a few of my favorite quick ways to update classic mom-hair looks [Video]

  • The Polished Pony- ditch the sleek pulled tight look, and opt for a soft relaxed pony with loose curl. Part the hair in a U-shape starting from the top of the crown, down to each ear. Section the front off, while you secure a nice high pony with the hair behind the part line. Then loosly gather the front hair and sweep it back gathering it just over the elastic. Twist the section two times and lay the twist over the elasitic- secure with a couple bobby pins and fluff for volume.

  • The Twisted Top Knot- take your top not to a whole new level by adding a rope twist. Not sure how to rope twist? Check out my handy illustration here. It gives the look of a fancy braid, but only requires a few extra minutes.

  • The Double Up Half Up- make your half-up style twice as nice by pairing two twists together. Start by securing two sections from near the temples, swept back to the center. Flip the tail inward towards the head two times to make a twist. Fluff and pull apart the twists for more volume and texture. Repeat the step with two additional sections directly below the first for a layered look.

What's your go-to style in the Summer? Hope you'll try one of these too, xo

SNOOP DUPE: LUXURY FACE CREAM UNDER $30

I LOVE skincare... and as such I've been known to spend a pretty penny on all sorts of creams, lotions, cleansers and more! In fact if my husband knew how much money I've spent over the years on my skincare alone, he'd probably have a heart attack!

Lately I've been noticing a trend in moisturizing cream; LUXURY

There has been so much buzz over these super

riche cremes

[french spelling = fancy], but you have to wonder is it worth the cost or are there dupes out there that perform just as well? Read on to find out.

  • Sisley Paris Sisleya Anti-Age Cream- $525 [1.6oz] This stuff is literally the creme de la creme! IMO it's better than La Mer, it's the ultimate luxury creme, and carries the price tag to prove it. The Sisleya has a super fresh scent, with an herbal undertone. It reminds me of a spa treatment in a jar. I especially love the hydrating and plumping action I get on my lips and eyes with this one. And the size of the jar is really decent for the price. If you are looking for a major indulgence that leaves the skin looking glowy and plump, then this is your guy.

  • Charlotte's Magic Cream- $100 [1.7oz] *shown above in the .52 intro size* Magic Cream has had MAJOR love all over the internet, mostly because of Charlottes' celebrity clients and models that all swear by it! This one has the most 'blurring' effect on the skin, and is great to apply just prior to your foundation. It has a more floral scent with a hint of SPF smell in there... even though it doesn't actually contain sunscreen. It does leave skin smoothed and glowing as promised.

  • Pixi Glowtion Day Dew- $22 [1.18oz] If you are looking for a little more bang for your buck, reach for the ultimate dupe to those mentioned above. The Pixi Glowtion has the exact same texture and richness to both higher end luxury creams, with the only exception being a bit of a luminous pearl sheen added. This adds to its 'glow factor' but in no way looks too shimmery. The scent on this one is identical to the Sisley Paris cream, and the pump bottle is actually preferred to the tub method. I reach for this one WAY more often then my expensive creams, simply because it works and I am not worried about using a hefty dose when I know I can repurchase easily.

Do you buy luxury creams? Do you think it's worth the cost?

BEST BLOW DRYERS FOR EVERY BUDGET

Using a nice blow dryer is comparable to driving the ultimate luxury car. And if you've been driving a rusty old hatch-back Honda around, you know exactly what I mean!

So what exactly is a good blow dryer?

Here is my criteria:

  • Powerful Motor

  • Light Weight yet Sturdy

  • Quiet

  • Dries the hair in under 10 minutes (15 for super long or thick hair)

  • Uses Ionic or Tourmaline Technology

  • Lasts a Minimum of 5 Years

If your dryer doesn't meet ALL of the criteria- you could be driving a rust bucket. And there are better alternatives out there for you. I've rounded up my top picks at every budget, so ladies (and gents) meet your new Cadillacs: [

video

]

  • Splurge- Harry Josh Pro Dryer $300 This is the dryer I use every day at the salon. It's Italian motor has a 15 year life span and it's powerful while being super compact. It has a 9 foot long cord which is awesome, and settings to turn on and off the ION function. You want 'On' for smoothness, and 'Off' for more volume. Totally worth the investment, in my opinion.

  • High End- Solano SuperLite $159 Lightweight with multiple heat settings- this guy is great if you suffer from static hair. It uses ceramic and tourmaline technology to add shine and heat hair from over drying causing unwanted static.

  • Mid Range- Ultra CHI $79 Besides being super cute to look at, this dryer is a tried and true that has been around (and loved) forever. CHI pioneered the use of ceramic technology for better heat distribution without unexpected bursts of cool air. This one has a single setting on heat however, so it's best for those with thick and long hair that tolerates high heat well.

  • Budget Friendly- Conair Infiniti Pro $29 This dryer packs a punch with over 1800 watts of power- but at a super affordable price. I LOVE the nozzle on this one because it's super wide and expands the width of your brush all at once. It also has a cool shot button which is great for a shiny finish on your hair.

  • Best Travel- BaByliss Pro Nano $39 Mighty and mini... two things that describe me- and THIS dryer! :) It's perfect for travel and comes with all the bells and whistles of your full size dryer, including a nozzle and long cord.

Thanks for reading- happy drying! xo

I'm a busy mom on the go- and that means I'm often found applying makeup in the car. I've gotten pretty skilled at it really... and I don't know if thats a skill I should be boasting about? Ha!

But today I wanted to share the

every woman needs on the go for that quick

5 MINUTE FRESHEN UP.

These are my tried and true favorites, and I know you'll love them to. They make a major impact with the least amount of time, and none of them require additional brushes or tools to apply. [

THE ULTIMATE LASH CURL GUIDE

One question I get asked a lot is, 'How do I curl stubborn lashes?’

Many women struggle to get their lashes to hold curl, and I feel your pain. My lashes are pretty much stick straight, but I have developed a 3-clamp technique that makes the world of difference. I hope you'll try it, and let me know what you think.

3 Clamp Technique for the Ultimate Lash Curl

  • 1- Clamp the lash curler at the base of the lashes as close to the skin is possible without pinching the skin. The angle of the lash curler should be parallel to the face, resting on the cheekbone.

  • 2- Slide the curler up the length of the lash, stopping half way- right in the middle of your lashes. Raise the angle of the curler about 30 degrees, so that the curler is sticking straight out from your cheekbone.

  • 3- Slide the curler out again to the tips of the lashes and clamp one final time, while the angle of the curler is raised 45 degrees, sticking straight out from the eye socket.

My favorite lash curler? This one here.

Thanks for reading, I would love it if you would share this post with anyone else who might struggle with their lashes too. xo

  • Say Hello To Sexy Legs- It's makeup for legs, and it's genius! Get a nice bronze glow, hide imperfections and rock that cute skirt with confidence. It washes off with soap and doesn't transfer on to clothes once dry.

  • Milani Moisture Lock Oil Lip Treatment- The perfect gloss... not too sticky, smells amazing, and treats dry lips with natural oils.

  • Bamboo Summer Sun Recovery Spray- Prep hair before you go swimming to protect it, then use this yummy leave-in again after shampooing to keep hair hydrated this Summer.

  • Pixi Glowtion Day Dew- OMG this is my new favorite moistuizer in a long time. It's got a rich texure, a spa-like scent, and a subtle shimmer that leaves the skin glowing.

  • Tangle Teezer Blow Styling Brush- A unique tool that speeds your blowdry without pulling or tugging on your hair. The special bristles wick water away and help to smooth the hair with their velvet type texture.

  • Cover FX Correct Click- Color correct with ease using these pigmented sticks designed to combat ailments like dark circles, redness, or dullness. They blend beautifully and work great under your foundation.

Have you discovered anything new this Spring that I should try? Let me know in the comments below. xo
